What MESICS Means and Does
For starters, let’s note what MESICS means. M-E-S-I-C-S is a contraction for the Latin phrase: Mens Sana In Corpore Sano, a phrase that means “A Sound Mind in a Healthy Body”. MESICS® is a leading edge organization focused on enabling you to create, sustain and enjoy optimal conditions of mind and body. That’s what we do.
Studies show that if you learn how to create “a sound mind in a healthy body”, you’ll not only be mentally sharper and physically stronger, but you will also live better and longer. You’ll have the clarity, energy, well-being and self- confidence to make the most of your life.
Stress
Studies also show that stress makes “minds unsound and bodies unhealthy”. Chronic stress is the greatest obstacle to health, personal growth, life satisfaction and to longevity. That’s why the World Health Organization identified stress as the #1 health and quality of life problem in the entire developed world.
Here’s why: Stress will leave you more prone to frequent tension, worry, anxiety and depression-and in time, more prone to the burden and anguish of serious illness, illness that just won’t go away.
Did you know that stress is not just about feeling tense, tired and wired?
Stress is also about the release of toxic chemicals and hormones into your system. Most people don’t know it, but studies show that stress chemicals drive many problems including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, anxiety, depression, and marriage and family troubles and breakdown.
Stress hormones are bad news. More than 90% of visits to the doctor are for stress related problems, and 80 cents of every health care dollar goes toward stress. Drs. Lyle H. Miller and Alma Dell Smith, two Senior Stress researchers said it in a nutshell: “Chronic stress kills. People wear down. Stress is linked to the six leading causes of death….”
Stress is Killing Us, Including Financial Stress
Slowly, quietly, and under the radar, stress literally wears you out and prematurely ages your body, weakens your immune system, and leads to chronic health problems. Day by day, stress disguises itself in your mind and body as depression or unhappiness, low energy and fatigue, aches and pains, tension and anxiety, and insomnia.
How can stress be this bad? Consider this: We live in a 24/7 world filled with intense financial strain and fear, traffic and noise, where communication is instant and often confusing, where bad news information bombards us at every turn, and where it takes two incomes to support a family.
We’re overscheduled and often overwhelmed. Our jobs often leave stressed out, drained and empty, and our relationships too often leave us confused and burdened. And we can even feel stuck in an identity that’s too small for who we truly are. Somehow we’re not doing what we want and love. Instead we do what we feel we should or must and live in pervasive disappointment. This is a huge source of stress, a source too often overlooked.
The truth is we’re not wired for this kind of life. We’re wired for a time that’s long gone. Our hard wiring is mismatched for the speed, confusion and complexity of life today.
As a result, toxic stress hormones leak into our system and damage our body and mind.
And we pay a steep price.
Take a Deep Breath and Consider What the Experts Say
Here’s what some leading experts on stress have to say:
“Stress is a heavy contributor to heart disease, cancer, respiratory distress, lupus and many other life threatening illnesses”.
-Dr. Paul Rosch,
Distinguished Medical Physician and Scientist
President: American Institute of Stress
“The prolonged release of stress hormones can impair our immune system and leave us open to invasions of cancer cells and dangerous infections.”
-Dr. Bruce McEwen,
Former Director of Rockefeller University’s Neuroendocrine Laboratory
“In our modern society, stress…hormones continue to wash through the system in high levels, never leaving. Stress leads to serious health problems”
-Drs. Chrousos and Gold
Senior National Institute of Health Scientists
“Women with high daytime stress hormone levels had reduced immunity associated with higher mortality, especially breast cancer mortality.”
-David Spiegel, MD,
Stanford University Study Director
“Stress can cause some of our most common killers – cancer, heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Stress-related diseases include depression, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, reproductive dysfunction, and the worsening of diabetes.”
The Endocrine Society
“Chronic stress kills. People wear down. Stress is linked to the six leading causes of death….”
-Lyle H. Miller, Ph.D. and Alma Dell Smith, Ph.D., Senior Stress
Researchers
“When people are under stress, they look haggard, it’s like they age before your eyes….” “Chronic stress appears to have the potential to shorten the life of cells….”
-Drs. Elizabeth Blackburn and Elissa Epel
-co-authors of National Academy of Sciences article reporting their research on stress and aging.

MESICS has assembled one of the top advisory boards around in the fields of Stress, “Inner Fitness”, Mindbody Science and Self-Growth. We’ve had the good fortune of having some very special people as MESICS Advisors. Here’s a sample: His Holiness Lungtok Tenpai Nyima is the leader of the indigenous Tibetan spiritual and cultural tradition known as Yungdrung Bon. He is a physician with a remarkable knowledge of mindbody functioning. He understands, on a fine tuned energetic level, how the mind creates stress, as well as the conditions that make the body weak, ill and prone to a disappointing life and an early death. As one of the preeminent authorities in the world on authentic contemplative, meditation and healing practices, he also understands how the mind can be trained to create calm, peace as well as the conditions that make the body strong, healthy and prone to a deeply satisfying and long life Dr. Paul Rosch is the world’s preeminent authority on stress. He’s President of The American Institute of Stress and Clinical Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry. Not only is he a highly accomplished physician, but he is also a fierce watchdog of the public interest. Dr. Rosch’s writings often call attention to how drug companies mislead the public in their unrelenting search for profits. Dr. Rosch was the 1998-99 President of The Pavlovian Society, an organization of distinguished international scientists devoted to integrating basic and clinical research and has been the recipient of many honors, including an award from Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, President of the American Society for Contemporary Medicine and Surgery for “contributions to our understanding of stress, health, and disease”. He was unanimously elected in 1999 as a Full Member of the prestigious Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, one of only six foreigners who have received this honor in the past twenty years. He has written extensively over the past forty-five years on the role of stress in health and illness, with particular reference to cardiovascular disease and cancer, and problems associated with job stress. Dr. Ernest Rossi is a clinical psychologist, Jungian Analyst and neuroscientist whose pioneering research, clinical work and writing are breathtaking. He sits alone at the very top of the mountain of mindbody research and knowledge that will in time change the way we think about stress, health, well-being and quality of life. We think his ground-breaking work is so important that we have a copy of one of his books in three different rooms! Dr. Rossi has won three Lifetime Achievement Awards for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Psychotherapy. He was a close clinical and research collaborator of Milton Erikson, the innovative father of clinical hypnosis. Their work together changed the landscape of both hypnosis and psychotherapy. Dr Rossi and his wife Dr. Kathryn Rossi direct the Milton Erikson Institute of the California Central Coast where they live in creative retreat.
